What impact has interviewing had on you?

My favorite parts of the interview are preparing the questions and the final part. While I prepare the questions, I like to put myself in the interviewee’s shoes and pretend I am answering them. Doing this helps me be better prepared and think of follow-up questions that can help me during the interview. Then, after I interview the person, the last part is my favorite because at the end, the people I talk to leave the meeting with a good impression and feel heard. I have had people thank me for asking them about a certain topic or for considering them for the interview, which is always nice to hear.

Another way interviewing has impacted me is by teaching me the importance of listening. Preparation is key, and having the questions, introduction, and closing parts is also important, but an interview cannot be done properly if you do not listen to the interviewee. Instead of thinking about the next question, I have learned to listen to their perspectives and learn from them. That is the only way I can gain much more than just the answers I need for my assignments. I also gain great insights into other people’s experiences.

Although interviewing can sometimes be challenging for me because I am still working on my confidence, I really enjoy it. It is great to learn about people, their perspectives, and the stories they want to tell. I always learn something new from each interview, whether it is about the person I am interviewing or about how I can improve my own communication and interviewing skills.
